To easily keep their water unfrozen in the winter, opt for the heater.   The temperature of the 5 gallon drum silicon heater can be controlled by a thermostat in the range of 30-150°C (86-302°F ). For plastic drums, it is recommended that the thermostat be set below 37°C (100°F).  For use as a chicken water heater, we recommend the lowest temperature setting of 30°C.  For those that want to save electricity without the task of unplugging/ plugging in, a thermostat outlet can be added.  The thermostat turns on around 32-35F and shuts off around 45F-50F.

Water:  Provide multiple, readily accessible water sources. Keep water cool by placing the auto water in the shade or adding ice.  Consider adding electrolytes to the water during extreme heat to help with hydration and mineral replacement.

Shade and Ventilation:  Ensure chickens have access to shady areas, whether natural (trees, bushes) or man-made (tarps, shade cloth).  Increase ventilation in the coop by opening windows, roof vents, and adding fans to circulate air.

Cooling Strategies:  Use misters or sprinklers around their run to cool the ground.

Food:  Mix a cup of sprouts (sprouted from our sprouting mix), 2 tablespoons eating herbs, and a cup of water and freeze.  The ice block treats  encourage hydration and provide a cooling sensation. You can also serve a daily portion of the Scratch and Peck crumble as a mash mixed with water as another way to ensure getting enough water.

Dust baths:  Provide well-shaded dust baths, which help chickens cool down by aerating their feathers and allowing cool soil to reach their skin.

Be Mindful of Overcrowding:  Avoid overcrowding, as it can exacerbate heat stress. Providing as much space as possible solves most chicken concerns.

Monitor for Heat Stress:  Be aware of signs of heat stress, such as panting, lethargy, or decreased egg production.  If comb color has a bluish-purple tint, it is a sign of heart failure and quick action should be taken to ensure hydrated and able to rest in a temperature controlled area between 65F -70F.
