A Gardener's Best Friend

Freeze-drying the produce grown in your garden is the best way to preserve your harvest for decades. Freeze-drying excels in producing stable, high-quality food that retains its nutritional profile. Freeze-drying adds shelf life to food while in season and can be enjoyed out of season.  Most foods taste great straight out of the bag such as fruits, candies, desserts, and veggies. Meals, meats, and dairy only need about 10 minutes and 1 2/3 cups of boiling water per 4 ounces to reconstitute to its original taste and texture.  Cold foods can be rehydrated with cold water.

Better than Canning: Canning and other preservation methods can destroy much of the nutrition found in fresh food. Freeze drying causes very little damage to the nutritional value of fresh food. Freeze-drying preserves dairy and egg products that other preservation methods cannot. Freeze drying can add 22 more years to the shelf life than that of pressure canning low acidic foods.

Better than Dehydrating: Dehydration endangers nutrients by exposing food to high heat and light resulting in some vitamin loss such as A and C. Freeze-drying removes water only. Since it does not involve high heat, the nutrients, flavors, and color of the food are left intact. Most nutritionist and culinary experts recommend freeze-drying especially as it relates to herbs.  Store bought dehydrated foods have a high sugary taste from the preservatives added. The removal of water in freeze-dried food and  proper storing reduces bacteria risks that makes food go bad without the need of additives.

Dehydrated foods have a chewy texture and taste different than fresh food due to vitamin loss and preservatives used. Freeze-dried food tends to have a delicious crispier and crunchy texture out of the bag and tastes the same as fresh when rehydrated. Dehydration remains very different from their fresh food derivatives. This means you could be limited to certain dishes. Freeze-drying allows you to store a greater variety of foods including ice cream, cheese, eggs, and yogurt. Dehydrated foods take triple the time to rehydrate and can end up leather-like tough and chewy.  Freeze-dried food rehydrates quick and easily; only requiring water (hot or cold).  The best part about reconstituted freeze-dried food is the similarity of fresh food in all aspects.

Save Food and Money: Save money on your grocery costs by prolonging the shelf life of foods. Home freeze dried products are 85% cheaper than commercially freeze-dried products. This includes taking supplies, electrical costs, and depreciation value of the unit itself into consideration. Start-up cost is typically the only true preserved disadvantage.  Click here to access our article highlighting how a freeze dryer can become a food budget saving machine for even those living below the poverty line.

Take science to a tasty new level

Turn your kids' attention to science or begin a very unique and profitable side business specializing in freeze-dried sweets. Discover how fun and delicious freeze-dried desserts and snacks can be! From freeze-dried ice cream to gummy bears and the very favorite – Skittles! There is a high demand for freeze-dried candy. The amazing texture of freeze dried candies such as saltwater taffy is worth letting your taste buds explore.

Freeze-drying, or lyophilization, is like "suspended animation" for food. Freeze-dried meals stored in Mylar bags lasts for decades. When you're finally ready to eat it, revitalize it with a little hot water. Even after all those years, the taste and texture will be pretty much the same. That's some amazing chemistry.  What better way to learn about solids, liquids, gas, atmospheric pressure, and molecular levels?

If you’ve studied chemistry, you may know there’s a predictable three-way relationship between pressure, volume, and temperature in any fluid. Water doesn’t always follow the rules of thermodynamics like other substances.  With most candy, we’re dealing with a quasi-solid or amorphous solid. Candy will typically expand and fluff up significantly.

Food Waste Avoidance

The average American easily wastes 325 pounds of food per person annually.  Pause a moment to think about all the dairy and condiments that expire before you get the opportunity to use them. The United States discards more food than any other country in the world. According to Feeding America, we waste more than $408 billion a year on food with dairy products being the food item we toss out most and produce coming in 2nd place. How often do you purchase fresh produce only to find out it went bad before you got a chance to use it? How often does your garden out produce what your family can reasonably eat?

Then, think about all your leftovers that end up in the trash.  Before  freeze-drying, I use to dedicate 2 days a week to consume leftovers to reduce our family's waste.  The luxury of freeze-drying eliminates making plans based on ingredient expiration dates.  Suspend the importance of having to eat everything you prepared in a certain time frame and simply eat what you feel like eating. How often do you enjoy your homemade meal but just don’t feel like eating the left overs the next day? A recent study by the USDA found that the average American family discards upwards of $2,400 worth of food per year. The ease of freeze drying at home could change this bad habit. Instead of waiting for food to go bad and tossing in the trash, toss it into the freeze dryer. I am confident you will get a chance to eat it within the 25-year expiration. If I am wrong, donate it instead of discarding valuable food. According to the USDA, 1 in 8 households struggle with food insecurity.  Wouldn’t it be nice to afford giving back to our community by  gifting our freeze-dried left-overs to the homeless and foodbanks instead filling up our landfills?  Please consider helping.

Open up a world of healthy food choices.

Your favorite fresh foods can be ready when you are. You and your kids will love the healthy snacks you can make with a home freeze dryer.

Healthy: Unlike canning and other ways of preserving food, freeze drying causes very little damage to the nutritional value of your food. Freeze-dried foods retain nearly all of the nutrients. Freeze-drying makes it easy to reconstitute a meal in minutes for the days you might be feeling unwell, or simply do not feel like shopping.

Special Diets: A home freeze dryer can help you make sure you always have access to fresh, tasty food that works with your dietary considerations. Freeze-dried food is perfect for those who eat gluten-free, raw food, vegan, vegetarian, paleo, or suffer from food allergies.

Stop food inflation

Raising your own chickens and tending to a family garden removes your family's dependency from grocery store shortages and future price increases this year. However, imagine the savings of storing your extra fresh eggs and other garden treats to enjoy decades later at today's pricing. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, prices for standard grocery store eggs are 120.72% higher in 2023 versus 1998. It is reasonable that in 2050, inflation will trend similarly or rise higher. A freeze dryer can help you store an abundance of fresh food for decades.

To help families get an idea of their grocery budget, the USDA has provided a cost estimate using their Thrifty Food Plan. According to this estimate, a referenced family of four (consisting of a heterosexual couple between the ages of 20 and 50 with two children between 6 and 8 and between 9 and 11) would spend around  $967.70 per month to eat a balanced diet. By 2050, families that consume $1000/month in groceries today can expect to spend $2000/month in groceries or more.  If you freeze dried an emergency year’s worth of long term food storage for your family and consumed it 25 years later, the future you saves $12,000+

Emergency Preparedness

Health Distress: If you or a family member that you care for becomes injured, or ill, being able to have ready to eat meals is priceless.  By using your freeze dried meals, you don't need to dirty a bunch of dishes or spend hours preparing food.  You can eat straight out of the pouches as finger food, or cut the bag and add hot water to eat out of it like a bowl.  Wouldn't it be nice not to have to worry about driving to the grocery store when either you don't feel like it or you are trying to care for a loved one?

Financial Distress: A home freeze dryer allows you to easily preserve large amounts of food and create a high quality emergency food supply, so you can take care of yourself and loved ones in case of job loss or financial downturns.  Buying freeze-dried food from a store is expensive. The food is often full of salt and other preservatives and the limited choice means you buy meals you may not even like eating. Freeze drying yourself is a great way to save money when building your emergency food supply.

Emergency freeze dried food companies try to lure families into buying their expensive pouches with the marketing idea that instead of buying a machine to freeze dry, you can buy a year’s supply of their food already freeze-dried for a similar price. While the pricing comparison might be true, the reality is their offer is only a 1- year of an emergency supply for a few thousand dollars. You would be left with only a year’s worth of food to show for your money. If you invest in a freeze dryer, you can make food for over 15 years and easily get to a 25-year supply for your family at the same cost. Not only is it enough for an emergency, it allows you to stop paying for food inflation over the next 25 years.

It is natural to think, "but then I have to buy the freeze dryer and the food I am going to freeze dry". The marketing companies are profiting from this line of thinking. Let me remind you of the $2,400/year worth of food the average  American tosses in the trash.  Simply freeze dry it instead and you don't even need to change your current food budget. You also get to control each recipe. Instead of a store-bought variety pack where you might only like a few flavors, a home freeze dryer lets you have complete control of your favorite restaurant leftovers and home cooked meals. by storing your garden foods and having a vast food supply on hand, there is no urgency to purchase a food item until it goes on sale.

Natural Disasters:  Most people will be affected by some type of serious disaster in their lifetime. Home freeze drying puts you in control of your family’s survival, no matter the circumstances.

Man-Made Disasters:  Man-made disasters such as war, explosions, chemical spills, and terrorism, cause human suffering, loss of life, and food shortages. Freeze drying gives you peace of mind in case any of these worst-case scenarios occur.
