Meet the bird that turns breakfast into an experience. Producing the darkest chocolate eggs, these birds bring both refinement and rarity to any flock. The French Copper Marans is famed for producing the world’s most luxurious eggs. Place an order to bring the rare delicacy once reserved only for the finest European tables to yours.
Feather Colors:
Cloaked in glossy black feathers that glint emerald green in the sun, and adorned with a regal copper mane around the neck, the French Copper Marans are as visually captivating as the treasures they produce. Every feather tells a story of heritage, prestige, and beauty.
Egg Gifting:
Prepare to collect 3–5 extra-large eggs each week in a deep, chocolate-brown shade so rich it’s been described as the caviar of the egg world. Whether nestled in a luxury market carton or displayed at a farm stand, these eggs command attention and admiration. Dark brown eggs aren’t just beautiful. They are nature’s little freshness vaults. Their rich color comes from natural pigments that also help create a slightly thicker, more robust shell compared to most white eggs. This thicker shell, paired with a stronger protective bloom (the natural coating that seals the egg’s pores), slows down moisture loss and blocks bacteria from entering. The result? Dark brown eggs often stay fresh longer than their white-shelled counterparts, even without refrigeration right after collection. That means more time to enjoy their farm-fresh taste and less worry about waste. Whether you’re collecting for own backyard flock or selling, those deep chocolate-brown shells are more than just a pretty color; they’re a built-in promise of quality, durability, and longer-lasting flavor.
Personality:
Behind their aristocratic looks lies a calm, composed, and loyal bird. They’re confident but not pushy, dignified yet approachable, and make excellent companions for both experienced poultry keepers and those building a refined backyard flock.
History:
Born in the coastal town of Marans, France, in the 1800s, these chickens quickly captured the hearts—and taste buds—of Europe’s elite. Their eggs were once a coveted delicacy on the tables of fine Parisian restaurants, and to this day, they remain a symbol of quality, tradition, and distinction.
Sexing Method:
Vent sexing as a day old is most common sexing method for this breed. The accuracy of being reliably identifiable by external characteristics on average is 85-90%. Several communities have laws in which roosters are not allowed. Thus, industry standard is to offer as a female chick or pullet even though 10-15% will be accidental roosters. We are DIFFERENT because we care for any female covered chicks that end up being a rooster.
We understand that several families live in areas where city ordinances do not allow roosters. While industry standard does not provide credit or rooster returns for roosters that were sold as 'pullets', we guarantee female sexing by giving the boy a home and providing store credit based on orginal purchased price should you accidently get a rooster. If you do not want to risk falling in love with a chick that turns out to be a rooster, we also offer the option of DNA sexing services. DNA sexing is a significantly higher investment as cost averages 3x that of a female covered chick.
