You will receive one Wyandotte chick for each quantity ordered, and the feather color will be a surprise at the time of pick-up. They could be Golden Laced, Silver Laced, Blue Laced Red, Gold Laced Black, Splash, or even rare or specialty colors.

Feather Colors

With Wyandotte Surprise, the feather color is our choice based on availability at the time of pick-up. Most common colors that we raise include Golden Laced, Silver Laced, Blue Laced Red, Gold Laced Black, and Splash. There is also the possibility of receiving rare, unique, or specialty patterns. Each bird’s plumage is full and soft, with intricate feather lacing that adds visual interest and makes them a standout in any flock.

Eggs Hens will Gift

Wyandotte hens typically start laying eggs when they are four to six months old, and can lay up to one egg per day from spring to fall. They tend to lay better in the winter than other breeds, and can average four to six eggs per week. They are known for laying large, brown eggs, but some may be cream-colored or slightly brown and can have speckles.

Personality

Wyandottes are gentle, friendly, and social birds. They are excellent with children, easy to handle, and enjoy interacting with their human flock members. Their calm temperament, combined with their attractive appearance, makes them an ideal choice for families or backyard poultry enthusiasts seeking both beauty and productivity.

History

Wyandottes were originally developed in the United States in the late 1800s as a dual-purpose breed suitable for both meat and egg production. Several color varieties were selectively bred, including Golden Laced, Silver Laced, and Blue Laced Red. The Surprise Wyandotte embraces this variety, offering a mix of classic, rare, and specialty colors that showcase the breed’s distinctive feather lacing, round bodies, and friendly temperament.

Sexing Method and Accuracy:

Vent sexing as a day-old is the most common method for standard sized breeds. Accuracy averages around 85–90%, which means there’s always a small chance of “surprise roosters.” The industry standard is to sell “female chicks” or pullets; even though 10–15% end up being accidental boys. Since many communities have ordinances against keeping roosters, we decide to be different!

While hatcheries and feedstores stop at the industry standard, we go further because we care. If your “female coverage” chick grows into a rooster, we will give that boy a free home and provide a store credit for the original purchase price with healthy return of the rooster. This way, your family is not left with the hardship of a city ordinance issue. For families who want zero risk of rooster surprises an heartbreak, we also offer DNA sexing services. DNA is the only truly accurate method, but is a bigger investment, costing about 3x more than a female-covered chick. The choice is yours. We’re here to make sure your flock is the perfect fit for your family.
