Combining beauty, rarity, and a tastey eggs of pure indulgence, the Blue Copper Marans is a show-stopper in any flock. Admired for its soft blue-gray plumage tipped with a regal copper mane and prized for producing deep, chocolate-brown eggs that last longer than most. They’re elegance, productivity, and freshness all in one feathered package.
Feather Colors:
The Blue Copper Marans wears a sophisticated steel-blue coat, often dusted with subtle lacing, and crowned with warm copper highlights around the neck. Their refined color palette sets them apart from other breeds, making them a visual jewel in your poultry yard.
Egg Gifting:
Expect 3–5 extra-large, dark chocolate-brown eggs per week—so rich in color they almost look like they’ve been polished. And here’s their secret: the natural pigments that give these eggs their deep hue also help form a slightly thicker shell with a stronger protective bloom. This keeps the eggs fresher for longer by slowing moisture loss and blocking bacteria, meaning you can savor their farm-fresh flavor even days after collection.
Personality:
Gentle, calm, and observant, Blue Copper Marans carry themselves with quiet confidence. They enjoy foraging, are cold-hardy, and integrate well with a variety of flock personalities making them a pleasure for both seasoned keepers and beginners.
History:
Descended from the legendary French Marans of the 1800s, the Blue Copper variety is a newer, rarer color developed through selective breeding. While their heritage ties them to the gourmet egg markets of France, today they’re beloved by backyard keepers and small farms worldwide for their unique look, rich egg color, and superior freshness.
Sexing Method:
Vent sexing as a day old is most common sexing method for this breed. The accuracy of being reliably identifiable by external characteristics on average is 85-90%. Several communities have laws in which roosters are not allowed. Thus, industry standard is to offer as a female chick or pullet even though 10-15% will be accidental roosters. We are DIFFERENT because we care for any female covered chicks that end up being a rooster.
We understand that several families live in areas where city ordinances do not allow roosters. While industry standard does not provide credit or rooster returns for roosters that were sold as 'pullets', we guarantee female sexing by giving the boy a home and providing store credit based on original purchased price should you accidently get a rooster. If you do not want to risk falling in love with a chick that turns out to be a rooster, we also offer the option of DNA sexing services. DNA sexing is a significantly higher investment as cost averages 3x that of a female covered chick.
