Standard Sized Partridge Cochin Chickens

Ornamental Beauty • Gentle Temperament • Cold Hardy

The Standard Sized Partridge Cochin is a truly eye-catching heritage chicken breed known for its rich, intricate feather patterning, massive fluffy appearance, and exceptionally calm personality. With their abundant plumage and rounded shape, Cochins are often described as looking more like feathery balls than typical chickens, making them a favorite among poultry enthusiasts, backyard keepers, and exhibition breeders alike.

Stunning Partridge Coloring

Partridge Cochins feature beautifully detailed feather patterns, especially in hens, with warm brown, gold, and black penciling that creates a striking, natural look. Roosters display bold red and black coloration with glossy green-black tails, adding dramatic contrast and visual appeal. This classic partridge pattern makes them one of the most admired ornamental varieties.

Large, Impressive Size

As a standard (not bantam) breed, Partridge Cochins grow to an impressive size. Hens typically weigh around 8–9 pounds, while roosters can reach 10–11 pounds or more. Their heavy bone structure and dense feathering give them a majestic, substantial presence in any flock.

Exceptionally Gentle and Friendly

Cochins are famous for their sweet, docile nature. They are calm, easy to handle, and make excellent pets for families, children, and first-time chicken keepers. Their laid-back temperament allows them to integrate well into mixed flocks, although they may be outcompeted by more aggressive breeds.

Cold Hardy and Winter Ready

Thanks to their thick, insulating feathers and feathered legs, Partridge Cochins are very cold hardy and perform well in colder climates. They are ideal for regions with harsh winters, as their fluffy plumage helps protect them from low temperatures.

Moderate Egg Production

While not primarily bred for high egg output, Partridge Cochins are dependable layers of medium to large brown eggs. Expect approximately 150–180 eggs per year under good conditions. They also tend to go broody, making them excellent natural mothers and a great choice for hatching and raising chicks.

Ideal For:

  • Ornamental and exhibition flocks

  • Backyard chicken keepers

  • Families and children

  • Cold climate environments

  • Breeders seeking broody hens

  • Poultry shows and hobby farms

Care & Housing

Due to their feathered feet and heavy bodies, Cochins benefit from clean, dry living conditions and low roosting heights to prevent injury. They thrive in spacious coops and runs where they can move comfortably without excessive jumping.
